The Becoming

The Becoming

by Jeanne Stein

Pros: Interesting and well written
Cons: n/a

Having recently read another similar book that turned out not to be so hot, I was braced for disappointment with this one as well. Instead, I’m happy to report that this novel was a very fun read.

This is an author I haven’t read before and she is clearly a strong talent. The novel is written in present tense, which can be difficult, but she pulls it off perfectly.

The heroine, Anna Strong, is a solid character – real and no-nonsense. The author very believably portrayed this woman as very tough without relying upon too many major kick-ass action scenes (although there are a couple of those in the right places). It is more believably shown in Anna’s handling of having her world turned upside down when she is turned into a vampire against her will or knowledge.

Although this is more of a “dark urban fantasy” title, there is definitely an element of romance. And although this is the first in a series, and the author definitely sets the stage for more adventures to come, the story wraps up well, leaving the reader satisfied and looking for more at the same time.

I don’t know why this “new vampire series opener” novel worked so much better than the last one that I read, but it sure did. I will look forward to picking up the sequel as soon as possible.

The action is great and the characters are developed well

The Anna Strong series is really very good. I happened upon it at my local library and had to run out to buy the next two books in the series just because I couldn’t leave the character alone. On the front cover it is described as a cross between L K Hamilton and Buffy… What more can I say than that. The potential to be a bad rip off is huge but this author really delivers. The only reason I wouldn’t give the book 5 stars is that the plot line is a little predictable (even though she’s clearly trying for a twist) and its not really a romance novel. Other than that I really enjoyed all of the books.
