The Becoming by Jeanne Stein
by Jeanne Stein
Pros: Interesting and well written
Having recently read another similar book that turned out not to be so hot, I was braced for disappointment with this one as well. Instead, I’m happy to report that this novel was a very fun read.
This is an author I haven’t read before and she is clearly a strong talent. The novel is written in present tense, which can be difficult, but she pulls it off perfectly.
The heroine, Anna Strong, is a solid character – real and no-nonsense. The author very believably portrayed this woman as very tough without relying upon too many major kick-ass action scenes (although there are a couple of those in the right places). It is more believably shown in Anna’s handling of having her world turned upside down when she is turned into a vampire against her will or knowledge.
Although this is more of a “dark urban fantasy” title, there is definitely an element of romance. And although this is the first in a series, and the author definitely sets the stage for more adventures to come, the story wraps up well, leaving the reader satisfied and looking for more at the same time.
I don’t know why this “new vampire series opener” novel worked so much better than the last one that I read, but it sure did. I will look forward to picking up the sequel as soon as possible.
